How to use it
- Tap Test my webcam and allow access when your browser asks.
- Look at the picture and check its resolution and frame rate.
- If you have more than one camera, pick another from the list to test it.
- Tap Stop when you're done: your browser stops using the camera.
How it works
The test uses your camera only after you tap the button and your browser gives permission. The picture shows on your screen and nothing more: it isn't recorded, stored or sent anywhere.
The test asks for Full HD, 1920 × 1080, and your camera sends the closest size it can. You see the real size that arrives, in pixels, and the frame rate your browser set.
The view is mirrored, like your self-view on video calls, and you can turn that off. Tap Stop or leave the page and the camera turns off, along with your browser's indicator.
Example
Maya has a job interview on a video call. She taps Test my webcam, allows access and sees herself on screen.
Next to the picture she reads 1280 × 720: her camera doesn't reach Full HD. If the picture looked dark, she'd turn on a light in front of her.
Frequently asked questions
How do I know if my webcam is working?
If you see yourself in the box after you tap Test my webcam, it works. Next to it you'll see the resolution coming in and the frame rate your browser set.
Does this webcam test record or save the video?
No. The picture shows on your screen and nothing more: it isn't recorded, stored or sent anywhere.
Why isn't my webcam working in the browser?
Your browser may be blocking it, or another app may be using it. Allow the camera in the site settings next to the address bar, and close any video call apps.
Why does my webcam look flipped?
The view is mirrored, like your self-view on video calls. Turn off “Mirror the picture” to see yourself as others do.
What resolution is my webcam?
The one shown next to the picture, in pixels. The test asks for up to 1920 × 1080; if your camera gives less, you'll see the closest size it has.
Can I test my phone's camera?
Yes, in up-to-date browsers on Android and iPhone. If your phone has more than one camera, pick the front or back one from the list.
