How to use it

  1. Tap Test my mic and allow access when your browser asks.
  2. Talk or clap near the mic and watch the meter move.
  3. If you have more than one mic, pick another from the list to test it.
  4. Tap Stop when you're done: your browser stops using the mic.

How it works

The test uses your mic only after you tap the button and your browser gives permission. The sound is measured in your browser: it isn't recorded, stored or sent anywhere.

The meter measures the level on every screen frame, in decibels relative to full scale (dBFS). The bar goes from −60 dB to 0 dB, the loudest level before clipping. A line marks the latest peak, then drifts down.

Your browser's echo, noise and automatic volume filters stay off, so you see what the mic picks up. If nothing above −50 dB comes in for 3 seconds, you'll see “No sound is coming in.” Tap Stop or leave the page and the mic turns off, along with your browser's indicator.

Example

Sam is about to join a video call and isn't sure his mic works. He taps Test my mic, allows access and says “hello.”

The bar rises to the middle, about −30 dB, and “Sound is coming through” appears. If the bar didn't move, he'd check that the mic isn't muted.

Frequently asked questions

How do I know if my mic is working?

If the bar moves when you talk, it works. “Sound is coming through” shows when sound arrives, and “No sound is coming in” after 3 quiet seconds.

Does this mic test record my voice?

No. The sound is measured in your browser while the test runs: it isn't recorded, stored or sent anywhere.

Why isn't my mic working in the browser?

Your browser may be blocking it. Allow the mic in the site settings next to the address bar. If it's already allowed, check your system's mic permissions.

Can I test a headset or USB mic?

Yes. Plug it in, tap Test my mic and pick it from the list. The test starts over with the mic you choose.

What if the bar hits the end?

Turn down your mic's input volume in your system settings. Near 0 dB the sound clips and comes out distorted.

Does the mic test work on my phone?

Yes, in up-to-date browsers on Android and iPhone. Tap Test my mic and allow access when asked.
