Keyboard tester: check every key

Press each key and watch it light up, so you can spot the ones that don't respond.

The test runs in your browser.

Click the keyboard or Start the test, then press your keys one by one. Tab and Esc take you out of the test.

How to use it

  1. Click the keyboard drawing or Start the test.
  2. Press your keys one by one: each one is marked when it works.
  3. Check which keys are still blank and how many you've tested.
  4. Leave with Esc or Tab, and use Reset to start over.

How it works

The test reads each key's physical position, not the character it types. That's why it works with any layout, even though the drawing shows the US layout.

A key lights up while you hold it and stays marked when you let go. Keys the drawing doesn't have, like the number pad, show up under Other keys. While you test, Space and the arrows don't scroll the page.

Tab moves the focus as usual, and Esc takes you out of the test. Inside the test, F5 doesn't reload the page, so you keep your progress; Ctrl+R (Cmd+R on a Mac) still does. It all runs in your browser, and nothing is saved.

Example

You press the semicolon key and it lights up on the drawing. Below, you see key “;” and code “Semicolon”, the browser's name for that position.

If a key doesn't light up, press it again. If it still doesn't respond, check the keyboard or its connection.

Frequently asked questions

How do I know if a key on my keyboard is broken?

Press it inside the test area. If it doesn't light up on the drawing, the browser didn't get that key.

Why don't some keys light up?

Some never reach the browser. The keyboard itself handles the Fn key. The system may also keep others, like Print Screen on Windows.

Does the keyboard tester work with any layout?

Yes. The test reads each key's physical position. Every key lights up in its matching place on the US drawing.

Can I test several keys at once?

Yes. Keys you hold down light up together, and Held down now says how many. That shows how many keys your keyboard registers at the same time.

Does it work with a Mac keyboard?

Yes. Command lights up the Win key on the drawing, and Option lights up Alt.

Does it work on a phone?

Only with a physical keyboard connected over Bluetooth or USB. The on-screen keyboard doesn't open in this test.
