Teams

Your teams show up here.

How to use it

  1. Type or paste the names, one per line.
  2. Choose the number of teams or how many people go on each.
  3. Tap "Make teams". For a new split, tap "Shuffle again".
  4. Copy the teams and paste them into the group chat.

How it works

The tool shuffles the list with your browser's cryptographic random number generator (crypto.getRandomValues), with no modulo bias. Then it deals the names out one by one, like cards.

That keeps the teams even: the biggest and the smallest differ by one person at most. If the names don't divide evenly, the last teams get one person fewer.

The list isn't saved: it lives on this page and goes away when you close or reload it. Nothing is sent to a server.

Example

There are 23 people for a pickup soccer game and you want 4 teams. The tool makes 3 teams of 6 and 1 of 5.

Choose 5 people per team instead and you get 5 teams: 3 of 5 and 2 of 4.

Frequently asked questions

How do I make random teams from a list?

Paste the names here, one per line, choose how many teams and tap "Make teams". The tool splits them at random in your browser.

Are the teams the same size?

Yes, or as close as possible: the biggest and smallest team differ by one person at most. 10 people in 3 teams make teams of 4, 3 and 3.

Can I choose how many people go on each team?

Yes. Choose "People per team" and type the number. The tool makes as many teams as it takes so none goes over that number, and splits everyone evenly, so some teams can end up smaller.

Can I keep two people apart or balance teams by skill?

No. The split is random and ignores skill and pairs. If you don't like it, tap "Shuffle again".

Does the team generator save my list?

No. The list only exists on this page: close or reload it and it's gone. Nothing is sent to a server.

How many names can I add?

From 2 to 1,000, each up to 100 characters long. You can make anywhere from 1 team to one per person.
