Metronome online with tap tempo
Set the tempo, press Start and follow the click. Don't know the tempo? Tap it in.
The sound is made in your browser.
120BPM
- 1
- 2
- 3
- 4
Tap the button along with the song: the tempo comes from your taps.
How to use it
- Type the tempo, drag the slider or use − and + to change it 1 BPM at a time.
- Pick 1 to 12 beats per bar, and choose whether to accent the first one.
- Press Start: the lights follow each beat and, with the accent on, the first one clicks higher and louder.
- If you don't know a song's tempo, press Tap tempo along with the beat.
How it works
The click is made in your browser with Web Audio, with no audio files. Your settings aren't saved or sent anywhere: reload the page and it's back to 120 BPM.
Each click is scheduled ahead on your browser's audio clock, not with a page timer. That keeps the beat steady, and a tempo change starts on the next beat.
The first beat clicks at 1,600 Hz and the rest at 1,000 Hz, lower and softer. Tap tempo averages your last 4 gaps between taps. Pause for more than 2 seconds and the count starts over.
Example
Your garage band is learning a new song, and nobody knows its tempo. You press Tap tempo on every snare hit, 0.625 seconds apart. The metronome works out 60 ÷ 0.625 = 96 BPM.
You keep 4 beats per bar and press Start. For the tricky part, you drag the slider to 80 BPM, and the change lands on the next beat. If the drummer rushes, the click won't.
Frequently asked questions
What does BPM mean on a metronome?
Beats per minute: how many beats sound in one minute. At 120 BPM you hear a click every half second, because 60 ÷ 120 = 0.5.
How do I find the tempo of a song?
Play the song and press Tap tempo on each beat, at least twice. The metronome averages your last taps and sets that number as the tempo.
How do I set the metronome to 3/4?
Pick 3 in Beats per bar. The first beat of each bar clicks higher; if you don't want the accent, turn it off.
Can I change the tempo without stopping the metronome?
Yes. Drag the slider or press − and +: the change starts on the next beat, without cutting the click.
How accurate is an online metronome?
As accurate as your browser's audio clock: each click is scheduled ahead on it. A page timer only decides which clicks to schedule; the audio clock decides when each one sounds.
Does the metronome work on my phone?
Yes, in current browsers on Android and iPhone. Where your browser allows it, turn on Keep the screen on so it doesn't go dark while you practice. On iPhone, turn off silent mode: with it on, the clicks make no sound.
