How it works
These aren't a font: they're Unicode characters, the text standard of phones and computers. That's why they paste where you can't pick a font. Each device draws them with its own fonts.
Each letter is swapped for its version in the style you pick, and accents stay on top: รฑ is still รฑ. Digits change only in the styles that have them; punctuation and emoji stay as they are.
It all happens in your browser: your text is never saved or sent to a server.

Is this a font I need to install?
No. These are Unicode characters that look like styled letters, so there's nothing to install. That's why they work where you can't change the font.
Why do I see boxes on some phones?
That device has no font with those characters, so it draws a box instead. Each device also draws them its own way, so their shape changes a little.
Do accents work?
Yes. Accents and the tilde on รฑ stay on their letters. Where they sit can vary with each device's font.
Can screen readers read fancy text?
Not like normal text: some read each character's odd name and others skip them. Don't use them for important information, such as prices, dates or contact details, or in a username.
How do I make bold text on WhatsApp without these letters?
WhatsApp has its own formatting: *bold*, _italic_ and ~strikethrough~. It's the more accessible option, because the text stays normal.
