Character counter
Type or paste your text and see how many characters it has, with spaces and without.
Characters are counted in your browser.
Type or paste up to about 200,000 characters; an emoji can take 2 or more. It isn't saved and never leaves this page.

How it works
Each character is counted the way you see it on screen. An accented letter or a family emoji counts as one, even if it takes several codes inside.
"Without spaces" leaves out spaces, tabs and line breaks. Punctuation counts in both totals.
Everything happens in your browser: the text is never saved or sent to a server. To check an essay by its length in words, use the word counter.
Example
A job application asks for a summary of 300 characters at most. You paste yours and it shows 327 with spaces.
You cut a sentence, the total drops to 291 and it fits. If the limit left out spaces, you'd check "Without spaces" instead.
Frequently asked questions
How do I count the characters in my text?
Paste it into the box: the totals with and without spaces show up right away, with no button to press.
Do spaces count as characters?
Yes. The "Characters" total includes spaces and line breaks. If you need the count without spaces, use "Without spaces".
Does an emoji or an accented letter count as one?
Yes. Here each character counts as one, the way you see it. So "é" or an emoji with a skin tone adds 1.
Why does another app give me a different number?
Some apps and forms count the text's internal units instead of what you see. There, one emoji can count as 2 or more, so leave some room if your text has emoji.
Is my text saved anywhere?
No. The text only exists on this page and is gone when you close or reload it. Nothing is sent to a server.
Is there a limit?
Yes, about 200,000 characters. That limit counts the text's internal units, so an emoji can take 2 or more. Anything past it doesn't fit, and the counter tells you so.
