How to use it
- Drag your image into the box, or use the Choose an image button to pick one from your computer or phone. It can be a JPG, PNG or WebP.
- Drag the crop box to move it, and drag a corner or an edge to resize it. You can also pick an aspect ratio, like 1:1 or 16:9, or type the exact position and size in pixels.
- If you need to, adjust the quality, which only applies to JPG and WebP images. Then press the Crop image button.
- Download the cropped image. It keeps the original format, and its name ends in -cropped: photo.jpg downloads as photo-cropped.jpg.
How it works
Your browser opens the image and draws only the part inside the crop box on a canvas. Then it saves that part in the same format: a JPG stays a JPG, a PNG stays a PNG and a WebP stays a WebP. Everything happens on your device: the tool never sends your image to a server.
Cropping doesn't change the resolution: the part inside the crop box keeps its size in pixels, and only what's outside it is removed. JPG and WebP are saved again at the quality you choose, which starts at 92: higher quality keeps more detail and makes larger files.
The fixed ratios are Original, 1:1, 4:3, 3:4, 16:9 and 9:16, and they keep the crop box's shape when you resize it. Original uses your image's own proportions; with Freeform, the box can have any width and height. With the keyboard, the arrow keys move the box and Shift + arrow keys resize it.
Example
You have a 4000 × 3000 pixel JPG photo and want to crop it into a square for your profile picture. Pick the 1:1 ratio, and the crop box becomes the largest square that fits: 3000 × 3000 pixels, centered, leaving out 500 pixels on the left and 500 on the right. Slide the box over your face, press Crop image, and you get a 3000 × 3000 pixel JPG.
Frequently asked questions
Are my images uploaded anywhere?
No. The image is cropped inside your browser and never leaves your device, so you can crop private photos too.
How do I crop an image into a square?
Pick the 1:1 ratio. The crop box becomes the largest square that fits in the image, centered. Move it over the part you want to keep and press Crop image.
How do I crop an image to an exact pixel size?
Type the values in the X, Y, width and height fields, which are in pixels. X is the distance from the image's left edge to the crop, and Y the distance from its top edge. Width and height are the size of the crop. With a fixed ratio, changing the width updates the height to match, and the other way around.
Does cropping an image reduce its quality?
It doesn't lower the resolution: the part you keep stays the same size in pixels, with no stretching or shrinking. A JPG or WebP is saved again at the quality you choose, which starts at 92; raise it toward 100 to keep more detail, at the cost of a larger file.
Can I crop multiple images at once?
No. This tool crops one image at a time, and choosing another image replaces the one you had. Download each cropped image before you open the next one.
Does it work on iPhone and Android?
Yes, in current versions of Safari, Chrome, Firefox and Edge, on desktop and on phones, and you can move the crop box with your finger. The exception is WebP in Safari: Safari can't create WebP images, so to crop a WebP, use Chrome, Edge or Firefox on a computer.
Does the cropped image keep its EXIF data?
No. The new image doesn't carry the original's metadata, such as camera details or GPS location, because it is drawn on a canvas and saved again.
