In a white elephant gift exchange, everyone brings one wrapped gift and draws a number. On your turn, you either open a new gift from the pile or steal one that's already open. The game ends when every gift is open. Most groups add a steal limit so it doesn't go on forever.

Pick the turn order with the random name picker: paste everyone's name and draw them all. The order they come out is the order you play.

What you need

  • One wrapped gift per player, all under the same price limit.
  • A turn order. Numbers on paper work, or a name picker on your phone.
  • A host to keep track of steals.

White elephant rules, step by step

  1. Everyone puts their wrapped gift in the middle.
  2. Draw the turn order. Player 1 goes first.
  3. Player 1 opens any gift and shows it to the group.
  4. Player 2 either opens a new gift or steals Player 1's gift.
  5. If someone steals your gift, you either open a new one or steal another opened gift.
  6. Keep going in order until every gift is open.

How stealing works

Stealing is what makes white elephant fun. It's also what makes it run long, so agree on these rules before you start:

  • Steal limit per gift. A common rule is three steals. After the third, the gift is frozen and stays with its owner.
  • No immediate steal-back. If someone steals from you, you can't take the same gift back on that turn.
  • One steal per turn. A turn ends when someone opens a new gift.

How many steals can you do in white elephant?

There's no official number, since white elephant has no governing body. Nobody gets disqualified by the International White Elephant Committee. The most common house rules:

  • Three steals per gift. The third owner keeps it.
  • One steal per turn. You can't trigger a chain that takes 20 minutes.
  • A total cap per game, for very big groups. For example, the game ends after 10 steals, and everyone left opens a new gift.

Pick one before Player 1 opens anything. Changing the rules mid-game is how friendships end.

The last turn

Player 1 never got to steal, since they went first. Many groups fix that with a final turn: once every gift is open, Player 1 may swap with any unfrozen gift. Then the game ends.

How many people do you need?

Six or more works best. With fewer players, there are few gifts to steal and the game ends fast. With more than 20, split into two groups so turns don't drag.

Can you play white elephant online?

Yes, on a video call. Everyone buys a gift and keeps it wrapped at home, or shows a photo of the box. On your turn, you pick a gift and its owner opens it on camera. Steals work the same: the host keeps a list of who has what. When the game ends, each person mails their gift to whoever won it. The shipping is slower than a steal, but nobody can hide a gift behind their back.

What is an acceptable white elephant gift?

Anything that fits the price limit and that most people in the room would be happy, or at least amused, to take home. Good rules of thumb:

  • Useful beats weird. A good gift gets stolen. A weird one gets regifted next year.
  • Works for anyone. Skip sizes, personal care and anything with a name on it.
  • Office-safe at work. If you'd hesitate to open it in front of your boss, leave it at home.
  • Wrapped so it doesn't give itself away. A box inside a box is a classic for a reason.

How to make white elephant more fun

  • Themes. Everything must be red, under a certain size, or from a local shop.
  • Dice white elephant. Players roll a die on their turn, and each number means an action: open, steal, swap or pass.
  • Mystery gift. The host adds one extra gift that can only be opened on the last turn.
  • A gift that's just for laughs. Agree that each person brings one silly item along with the real one.

White elephant vs. Secret Santa

In white elephant, nobody buys for a specific person, and gifts change hands. It suits big groups or coworkers who don't know each other well.

In Secret Santa, each person buys for one person they drew in secret. It suits groups where people know each other. For that, use the Secret Santa generator: each person gets a private link with their match.

White elephant vs. Dirty Santa vs. Yankee swap

Same game, different names. Each group adds its own twists, like more steals or a different last turn, but the rules on this page work for all three. Call it whatever you like; the stolen gift hurts the same.

Tips for hosts

  • Set a price limit everyone can afford. Put it in the invite.
  • Ask for wrapped gifts. Nobody should guess what's inside.
  • Write the rules on one card. Read it out before Player 1 goes.
  • Draw the order where everyone can see it. A random draw on screen avoids arguments.

Pick the order and start

Paste the names in the random name picker, draw them all, and read the order out loud. Then hand Player 1 the pile.
